If you’re thinking to organise your wedding in Italy surely Venice is the city of love and getting married there is a thought that all couples, Italian and not, have done. It is a city rich in history and art, has wonderful islands and really offers a lot of location for a wedding.
Venice appeals to everyone but to consider it as possible location for your wedding you have to consider some fundamental things, such as the logistical issue, tourism and water. For a wedding in Venice you need a precise and impeccable organization, you need to have everything clear from the beginning.
Venice offers hidden streets, wonderful streets, majestic bridges and more intimate bridges.. and I cannot mention the islands and their unique features.
At the photographic level you definitely don’t have to worry because every corner is wonderful to be the background to your photos. Certainly a taxi ride allows you to have very nice photos through the most characteristic places of the city, such as the Rialto Bridge on the Canal Grande, or pass under the Ponte dei Sospiti, or offers the possibility in speed to go to St. George and have as St. Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace.
Beautiful are the Venetian islands for a couple’s photo session, for your wedding or for the part of the portraits. Burano has wonderful colors, Torcello seems to immerse itself in a paradise of greenery and tranquility.
The Churches in Venice to get married are a lots. I photographed some religious ceremonies in Venice and had the opportunity to see several churches, large and imposing like many more intimate ones.
Very beautiful and in a relatively quiet area for Venice is the San Nicolò dei Mendicoli or Mendicanti, located in the sestiere of Dorsoduro. It’s one of the oldest churches in the city and inside it’s very classic and golden. It also has an outdoor space, similar to a small square, that allows you not to run immediately in the location but to have time to take some photos out there.
Central in St. Mark’s Square is the Crypt inside the basilica of San Marco, and it’s ideal for very intimate weddings with few guests.
Other very beautiful churches and where weddings are often held are the Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli with marble interiors and a raised altar and the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, a very large place.
As for the Venetian islands, another very beautiful church but certainly more challenging for greatness is the Chiesa del Redentore, located in Giudecca, very large but at the same time bright and neutral. Beautiful is the staircase before the entrance and also the view of which I can enjoy newlyweds and guests.
Ceremonies of other religions
For your wedding in Italy, Venice offers many opportunities to celebrate ceremonies of different religions, such as an Armenian ceremony in San Lazarus of the Armenians, or a Jewish ceremony in the ghetto in the Spanish Synagogue in Cannareggio.
Civil Ceremony in Venice
There are some very nice rooms that allow you to celebrate the civil ceremony in Venice. First of all is Palazzo Cavalli overlooking the Grand Canal with fantastic views of the Rialto Bridge.
Other palaces with rooms for a civil ceremony in Venice are Palazzo Ca’ Farsetti and his Stucchi hall; the Council Room at Ca’ Loredan Palace and finally the Hall of the Golden Hearts inside the Ca’ Vendramin Calergi palace.
The island of Torcello struck me from the first time I saw it and even when I took the wedding of Luca and Federica.
It's a different island from the others, characterized by a lot of greenery and some corners, in my opinion magical.
You can decide to marry with a religious ceremony at the Church of Santa Fosca, beautiful both outside and inside or decide to celebrate the civil or symbolic ceremony in the location.
In this case I recommend the wonder Locanda Cipriani, its very beautiful garden and the very renowned cuisine.
Locanda Cipriani offers many different spaces, just pay attention to the number of guests not being a very large location. But it’s definitely perfect for intimate, refined and well-groomed weddings.
As for the photos the island of Torcello is my favorite, it offers beautiful green spaces, walls and brick walls, and beautiful views.
In Torcello the organization is fundamental both for vendors but especially for the guests, in fact you arrive only by boat, in a steamer or taxi. Consider this thing and the start and end times of the wedding well.
Getting married by the sea
In Venice everything is possible, even to celebrate your wedding by the sea, with absolute calm especially in spring and late summer.
This can be done on the beach of the Lido in Venice, and the point of support also for the reception can undoubtedly be the Hotel Excelsior with the multiple possibilities it also offers for the buffet or aperitif and for dinner in the beautiful Hall of Stucchi.
The style is very refined, elegant and all very white, this room is in fact full of white stucco and mirrors.
As for the reception Venice offers a lot of wonderful palaces, with frescoed rooms or even luxury hotels or more intimate locanda and with more affective atmosphere.
Think about your style and the theme of your wedding and then look for a location that fits you needs. Also rate very well locations that offer a valid plan B in case you have decided to eat out and for bad weather this is not possible.
A very nice building is the Hotel Danieli with on the top floor an amazing panoramic terrace where you can organize a dinner, maybe at sunset. It also offers several rooms inside.
Aman Venice is another wonderful palace overlooking the Grand Canal, where you can organize and celebrate your wedding.
On the Grand Canal you will also find Cá Sagredo Hotel with its pink-fronted wall and frescoed rooms inside.
Other locations to consider and consider for a reception in Venice are the Belmond Hotel Cipriani at Giudecca offers both green space and a wonderful brick room for the reception; in the Isle of Roses is located the JW Marriott which offers several options for both the ceremony and for the reception that you decide to do it outside or inside.
Last but not least the St. Regis Venice and also the aforementioned Cipriani Inn in Torcello.
Tips for getting married in Venice
My advice for a perfect wedding in Venice is to have clear ideas, to be very sure of the choice that’s definitely challenging.
If you can’t organize everything, lean on a wedding planner with experience with weddings in Venice. Be careful of the period when you decide to get married and be aware from the beginning that you will find and you will have tourists everywhere who will stop you, screaming to you “congratulations”, so if you are shy, you don’t want chaos, or be the center of attention, consider well if Venice is the city in which to marry.
The important thing is the timeline: take the right time to do everything, to arrive in time for the ceremony, talk to your photographer for the couple session timing and already think about an itinerary so that you already have the time of arrival in the location.
My personal advice, don’t make the guests wait too long while you are doing the couple session, find vendors who give you total security on everything, so that you manage to rest easy and live to the maximum your wedding in Venice, which will surely be wonderful.
